About the Artist: Sarah Lashinsky from Atlanta, GA

Sarah is a multidisciplinary designer and illustrator. By day, she is a product designer at Mailchimp. In the evening, she can be found crafting and tinkering in her Atlanta home studio, gravel biking in rural Georgia, or tending to her garden.

“This piece is about womxn's joy as resistance. I worked on this piece against the backdrop of two major inflection points: the global Coronavirus pandemic, as well as the powerful movement for liberation from oppression and police brutality, designed and built by Black organizers in America. I wanted to make a piece that distilled the joy that womxn build for themselves, even in the face of trauma, uncertainty, oppression, and grief.

The quote in the piece is from Betty Madigan's 1958 song "Dance, Everyone, Dance". Although Madigan herself was not Jewish, the song took its tune from a 1918 Chassidic Nigun, best known for its use in the Israeli folk song "Hava Nagila". This line has become a mantra for me, and is scrawled on a scrap of paper on the doorframe of my front door. It is a reminder to me of the way the womxn in my lineage moved through grief and trauma before me: by dancing, by singing, by putting one foot in front of the other, even when "the heart" knows that there is so much to be done.”
